Custom F&F Bobber

Recommended Posts

Im sure alot of fellas have heard and use the modified weighted bobber, but for the folks that dont know...heres how to put it together.

Go to wallieworld or your local takle shops and buy a pack of weighted bobbers, they come in threes. You will need a small file, needle nose pliers, small pipe cutter or razor blades and gloves because your working with lead. First disassemble the bobber by using your pliers to bend the TOP hooked wire strait, and lay out all your parts somewhere so you dont lose them. You want to bend the top only because the bottom is where you want to wrap you line around and you dont want any sharp edges. 2nd, take the lead weight and slide it up on a pen or something with a slightly bigger dia. of the inside of the weight. 3rd, install it in the pipe cutter and turn it untill you have an even cut all the way around the weight......this is the MOST important step because if you dont get an even cut it will not work corectly. Once you have split the weight you can use the file to shave some weight if need be just to get them the same weight. 4th, assemble the bobber back together and bend the TOP of the wire back to a hook. 5th and final, OP check your bobber in your kitchen sink to see if it lays flat on its side, if it does your good...if it is heavy on the top or bottom you have to remove more weight from the lead. Once you have the bobber laying flat attach a fly to the bottom and see if it stands strait up. If it does your done! Heres some pics to go along with the steps. Hope this helps anybody geting into bobber fishing.

Man, Ive tried to do this a couple of times...not the same method, but where you put the weight into a burnt hole in the bobber....I can get it all set up but trying to put the stupid thing back together with my man-bear-pig hands dosent go to well! :censored: Springs go flying across the room and the blood in my head starts to boil! So, Ive given up on making my own. Maybe Ill try this way and see how it goes. I might just have to buy a few off a feller' in the long run.

whats the advantage over a stock bobber?

Nothing if you dont fish float n fly much, if you do fish it this bobber acts as a flag or indicator. Some times when you are bobber fishing and you are at the perfect depth the fish will just suck the fly in and stay put. When this happens the modified bobber will then turn on its side where a stock bobber will do nothing, and you can not tell if your on the bottom using a stock bobber. This just gives real bobber fisherman an advantage, if you dont fish much than dont waste your time. Hope this helps.

Its what ever float your boat. These bobber cost $1.88 for a pack of three and less than 5 mins of your time, Bobs Bobbers are great if you like spending more money and are not good with tools... :thumbsup2::banana057: :banana057: Just trying to give a little info out to the folks who may be interested. :2cents:

Great information. I don't fish a float n fly much but when I do I have them hit it on the fall and if u don't know they got it, it does no good. I'm gonna get me some floats soon. With this heat I can't wait to start fishing it.

There is another method to make a "modified" bobber if you dont have the pipe cutters. My only problem is I never can get them to go back together...lol. Instead of cutting the weight, Cut the bobber itself in half. Next, take a lit cig and burn out a small hole in the center of the bobber. Put the weight in the center hole and then put the bobber back together. Same principle, only a diferent way of doing it.

Why are we talking about bobber fishing in July? LOL.....wishful thinking!
