1998 Johnson Venom

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 Johnson Venom 200 hp motor. When you run it on muffs it runs just fine. The minute we back it into the water it starts spitting and dies out. It runs fine once you get under way/high rpm’s. But won’t idle it starts spitting and sputtering and dies out.

Any ideas

Id check for any gas leaks or seals.  I had an issue one time on a little 15hp motor where it would do the same.  Fire up fine at home and spit and sput around.  Turned out to be a seal on the vacuum driven gas pump seeping air into the line causing it to not get enough fuel unless it was under running RPMs etc.

Might try replacing the Primer bulb if the boat is equipt with one. I have had that same issue a couple times and new bulb fixed it about every time.

+ 1 on softy if that don't work u my need to set your low idle up a little when u put a motor trimmed down in the water it will idle lower then on muffs I had the same problem with mine doing that  low idle was my problem hope u get it fix it could be the fuel pump diaphragm to seen it a lot times to lets air seep in low idle runs good middle and wide open  when u let off it dies ever time. Startron fuel stabilizer I use it ever fill up and 100% gas haven't had one problem out my motors have a 86 Johnson 93 model  😀 good luck

I second that, my 115 Mercury was doing g the same thing, replaced the bulb and it stopped.

The Looper Johnnyrudes have a two stage stator.  When the motor is cold it runs off the low side and once it warms up it runs off the high side.  If the low side get weak they will run sloppy when cold, but once you get under way it will pull off the high side.  The optical eye ignition like one the Venoms, Fast strikes, Intruders and Vindicators can be tricky.  The low side of the stator burns up from not allowing the motor to warm up and switch over to the high side.  Even on a hot start it starts on the low side then after a short moment you'll hear the idle change.  I'll take a Looper over a merc any day, but the electric can be a night mare.  Just something to check that can give the same results.
