Best battery?

Recommended Posts

I’m sure this has been asked before but like to hear some current opinions please. I have a 2012 18-1/2 ft triton with a 150 pro xs. Went out today and motor wouldn’t start this morning sounded like battery was close to dead even with onboard charger saying full charge decided to fish around with just trolling motor and after 3-4 hours and several attempts to start with battery still sounding weak it seemed like temps warmed into the 40s and it started to crank fast enough to start then started and ran fine rest of the day. Have had seems like every type of 27series cranking battery think most have had 600cca but none seem to last more than a year before having to be replaced due to being too weak to crank my motor over fast enough to get it to fire(especially in freezing temps). Stopped on way home and had battery tested they told me it showed 467cca and was fine just needed charged. My motor has always sounded like it cranks over slow on the turn of the key even in warm temps with a full charge, always just figured it sounded that way guess if compression. Thinking about buying something with 800-1000 cca  like a optima or odyssey. Opinions or experience with similar problems? Should a man spend the $250+ on a high end battery?

If it helps I purchased a Duracell AGM from Sams Club for my crankin battery.. Seems to hold up well to a full day of electronics running and still plenty of crankin power.. No problems in the colder temps with it. Its about 2 years old now. Comes with a year warranty I believe... 160.00 if I remember right...

On the 3 boats that I have owned, I've ran EverStart and Interstate. Both had over 800mca. Never had any issues with none of them. The cranking battery I have now will need to be replaced because it won't hold a charge although I'm not having any other issues as far as starting. To answer your question, you don't need to spend money on a high end battery. The EverStart's are under $100 and Interstate may be just over $100. Whatever your preference is. I fish out of Nobby's rig and his cranking battery holds up really well. For that price I'd definitely check that battery out! Hope more people chime in and that this helps!

I run 31 series Interstates, one cranking and two for my trolling motor. Don't think I ever paid over $150 for any of them. I even use the the same battery on my boat lift (that gets charged with a solar panel) for the past four years. I'm happy with the Interstates.

I also run 3 of the 31 series Interstate batteries after trying a 27 and a 29 as a starting battery. The smaller ones just wouldn't hold up all day or night with my graphs and pumps running all the time.

After having to replace my cranking battery (or group 24) roughly every 18 months, I put a larger tray and went with a group 29 deep cycle. My cranking requirements are less than most because of my 60hp 4-stroke but because I tournament fish so much, I use my livewell, depth finders and and lights more than most. All of which run off of the cranking battery on my boat. This one has lasted two years so far.

Thanks for the input fellers. After reading y’all’s posts and talking with the guys in the shop at watsons decided to try a 31series interstate high cycling battery (950cca). Just a little bit longer than the 27 I was running (1/2in or so) gonna have to get a lil bigger tray. Time will tell I reckon.
