What line size for Shakey Head

I fish an 1/8 or 1/16 oz head on 6lb floro for smallies most of the time, 4" worm.Line size can make a huge difference with the smallies.I like a 7' med action rod with a fast tip. 6lb p-line floro is amazingly strong stuff for the diameter & is virtually invisible.Just gotta be alittle careful on the hookset!

Spinning rig with 8lb flouro or 30lb power pro with flouro leader.

I will fish this from 1 foot to 25+ ft .... so the depth and the wind will dictate what size head and what size worm I use. It's hard to fish a shakey head on a windy day with too small a head. I also like the tip-up version from do-it molds with the biggest hook I can put on it.

If you have the patience, you will catch alot of fish and there will be alot of big ones in there. Just like any other lure, practice, practice, practice. Go out one day and take 1 or 2 rods that ONLY have shakey heads on them and you will learn. I am doing the same with jigs.

Good Luck

If your just using mono, you don't know what your missing. I used to use mono with the shakey. Then a buddy of mine turned me onto using braid with a flouro leader, WOW! That's all I can say! I use 30lb Power pro and 10lb Seaguar flouro for the leader. You will feel everything!

The shaky head is a lot more versatile than a lot of folks think, and therefore I use a wide range of lines and rods to match it.

For standard, 1/8 shaky head presentations, a 7 foot medium or md/hvy rod and 8 lb fluoro is hard to beat. You want a rod with a bit of tip for sensitivity, but enough backbone to set the hook.

When I am fishing suspeded fish, I throw a 1/16 size with 6 lb fluoro. You definitely need a light tip with some backbone on the rod to set the hook but not break off, so I throw a 1/16 with the 7 foot medium rod, and back off on the drag.

Now, I will flip a shaky head in heavy cover when they are hesitant to bite traditional flipping presentations. I simply upsize my bait and hook, but not necessarily my weight. I like to use a 7'3 Powell MH casting rod with 12-17 lb line, depending on the thickness of the cover. I am also bad to throw an 8-10 inch straight tail worm offshore in the summer on a shaky head, and the same rig works good in this situation, but I upsize the head size.

I guess I will be the odd ball again. I use 30lb braid/15lb floro leader spooled on a Daiwa Pixy mounted on a E21 Gold Carrot Stick ML action. I will say this is the lightest, most sensative combo I have ever owned. I had thrown a shakey for years on a spinning set-up but I fell more comfortable with a baitcaster in my hands.
