Big E-Tec

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what other people think. The evenrude e-tec came out several years back and they were sdvertised as the best thing EVER! Best gas mileage, best admissions, best performance. I have noticed you just do not see them around here. I mean you see a few but you dont see that many compared to Merc's and Yammies. What do you guys think?

I know some guys that have had nothing but problems out of them, but I know just as many if not more that absolutely love theirs.

I had a friend that got one the years they came out and his boat spent more time in the shop than on the water. When he got a new boat the following year he got a Merc Optimax and never looked back. I have talked with a few folks that have new ones now and they say they are great but then it does take a few years to get the bugs out if new things. That why I would never rush out and buy new stuff the first couple years till they had proved they had a good product........... :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2:

One thing that may have hurt that motor was over advertising. When it first came out it was supposed to be the best thing ever. Bass & walleye boat magazine did a independent test on the big three motors. Yammie haw, Merc , E-tec, they used the same boat. The E-tec I think finished dead last in every category except one. It finished last in top speed, gas mileage, emmisions, ect. The only thing it finished first in was 30-40mph I think that was the category.

Saying all that, this was what brought up the conversation. Me and a few friends were talking about how much money was invested in advertisement for the E-tec. The e-tec had infomercials that were run in prime time tv spots. They were advertised like crazy. We noticed how few of them around here you see. Go to Douglas on a Saturday and you may see five out of 300 boats.
