fritobasser
Ok guys this may sound like a stupid question, but is there a way to put an outboard motor into gear when the cable breaks? Although it was bad luck that my cable broke...I was glad it broke at the no wake zone instead of a few miles up the lake. I was just wondering if there was a way to engage when the cable breaks in case it ever happens again and I am not close to the boat ramp.
tjrifewtbast
Iam not for sure but the cable should be connected to something going into the motor right? idk without looking at it but i would think u might be able to put a pair of vice grips on and move it in and out and make it work
Mayle
Im not an outboard engine expert but I think you can put it into gear by removing the cowling and manually putting it into gear. Follow the cable housing and find where the cable comes out and attaches to the selector on the engine, you should be able to put it into gear using your hands to move the selector forward or aft. Like I said, Im no outboard mechaninc but I think this would work.
MOONlite
Mayle is correct. just be careful with your balance, because you may put it in reverse. i fished a tournament out of 25e on cherokee. the boater went to the dam and broke the throttle cable right as we got there. he was going to idle all the way back. i removed the cowl, tied a rope to the throttle and tied a loop on the other end to go around my foot. i gave it throttle while he drove and we made it back just fine. softbaitmaker
Hey Roy, my question is are you talking about engaging to lower unit in and out of gear or talking about throttle control. You can manually engage the lower unit by removing cowling and putting it in gear. As far as throttle control I know I can on my carburated motor but have no clue on the newer fuel injected motors. Stratos260
I had to change my cable a little while back and yes you can engage it at the engine. Mines just a lever on a shaft. If your throttle cable is working once you get it in gear the throttle controls the speed. I also learned back when I changed mine to never put it in gear without the engine running. I had rebuilt my carbs and I was going to check that my cables didn't bind and I broke my shift cable. If the engine isn't running the gears have a harder time meshing and it can bind up and cause a broken cable.
Stratos260
I just wanted to add if you ever need to check your cables or shift lever without the engine running you can shift it in to gear as long as you have someone turning the prop while you engage it. I had to do this to adjust my shift cable.
