Having them linked together is great, if your on a spot catching fish you can mark the spot on the front gps and it will automatically mark it on the back unit. Depending on what type of fishing you use your units for is up to you but I would put the Elite 7 HDI up front just due to the fact of the screen space you will have and put the smaller unit at the back. JMO. You can have 3 screens open on that Elite 7 and still see everything without squinting. For myself, I just run two pages on the back unit (drivers Console) when Im boating down the lake, Chart and Sonar. I will turn on the structure scan if Im wanting to check out deep brush or around docks. This is just how I do things, you may get 100 different ideas from the other guys on here that you may like better.

If you can swing it, I would get one with side image for the back. I never knew how much I missed until I got one.

While I use Humminbird for the back, I use a HDS unit up front. I can't link them together. I'm probably gonna add another bird unit up front so I can link GPS. I prefer the 2D of Lowrance but the side image of the Humminbird unit. The Lowrance unit has the better down image to me.

Lowrance has the better down image, 2D and GPS mapping in my book. The Hot Spot map for Lowrance is awesome.

The Elite unit is a good unit. I had the 5 on the other boat. If I was going your route I might put a 5 on the back and a 7 up front if you can link them. The ability to split it into 3 screens is an awesome feature. Of course 2 elite 7 units would be better! LOL

Hey fox if i link them do i still need 2 nav chips or will one work ?

I have two HDS units with one Navionics Hotmaps Platinum card in the back unit. My HDS's are linked together and it does not read on the front unit, only the unit that the card is inserted in.

From what I've seen, the map in the Lowrance unit from the factory are terrible. I guess they have a deal with the map companies so everyone can get rich. I wouldn't consider running any area lakes without a map card.

I doubt the elite units are any different from the HDS units... Probably need two cards.
