when it happens , pull out until it stops, crank handle just till engages, press down on spool tight with thumb, crank handle a little ways while pressing with thumb, push spool release , pull line out , if stops again repeat crank and press. this usually works every time.

Great technique. I use it almost every time out. I saw it on a Bill Dance episode. He said to crank it 5 turns then try to pull out. It works with flourocarbon and mono but not braid. Don't try with braid.

i have been able to get it to work with braid (50lb or less) but most of my baitcast only hold approx 150 yards or less

The trick he showed for braid was to spool the braid on the reel. Then cast as far as you can. Then pull out approximately ten or so more yards of line. Then take a piece of black electrical tape and put across the reel spool. The reel your line back in. That way when you backlash with braid you only have a small backlash instead of one all the way down to the bottom of the spool.

I need to get my son in law to read these notes. He spends at least half the day of fishing removing birds nests from his reels. I don't want to brag but it's fact I might POR twice a day and normally they are small. amkes my son in law mad because I seldom POR. That is why I use Gold Chronarch SF reels. I told myself years ago that if I ever found a reel that I could set the windage brakes and spool brakes to prevent those butt kicking birds nests I would buy them and I'm still looking to buy more of them. I own 9 now and want to have an even dozen so need three more and I look for them in every store that sells used reels trying to find them.

Nope, Im just that dang good. Im joking Softy......I dont do it alot, but I usually tear into a cussing fit when I do. LOL!

I actually have made partners mad at me over the years with my bait casting abilities. Anyone that has ever fished with me including Janet Parker have commented on how I seldom if ever get a bail up on a bait caster. I also make very long casts with very light weights and don't bail up. About the biggest weight I use is 3/16 oz. Tungston 95% of the time. On really windy days 15 to 20 Plus MPH days I will got to a 1/4oz but that is seldom. I actually put a show on one time down on the docks at Bulls Creek because a guy challenged me to a casting contest with him using a spinning outfit and believe me there was about 80 anglers down there watching. I was not aware that there was bets going on in the crowd but I know several folks that bet on the spinning rod that lost their money. The challenge was with 1/8th oz weights on Stick baits, 3/16 oz weights on stick baits and un weighted Flukes. I was able to out distance him on each cast by at least 10 feet and never got a birds nest on any cast. The back breaker came on the fluke cast cause a breeze came up and I still got about 5 feet beyond his cast and didn't birds nest. To this day the guy has not spoke to me and we were friends before that day. Thing is all of this was his idea. Now with all of that said, I am far from perfect. I also have my moments of not paying attention after a break off and not pulling the line out that is trapped in the spool and I cast with out first pulling it loose. Another thing is I always back off all of my spool brakes and wind brakes after a day of fishing. The following trip to the lake before going fishing I will sent all the brakes to that days fishing conditions and winds. I also sent all my reels to the tip action of the rod because about 80% of all bail ups come from the rod tips action verses the bait and weight. If you don't sent it correct and the rod tip reacts to fast and whips back on the cast it will stop the bait in the air and cause a bailup. It acts just like hitting a dock or over hanging tree limb and bait stopping short and your gonna bail up. I hope maybe a few of these tips might help some folks out. I know I spent a lot of years digging out bail ups before someone showed me how it worked and I still to this day appreciate him for his help.

What type of line were you using in this competition softy? I think I could out do a spinning reel if I had about 20 or 30 lb brand new braid on a bait caster. Now if your talking mono I would backlash that sucker if I tried to heave it.

At the time I had 20lb Suffix Braid with 8 lb Diameter but I can do about as well with Suffix co-polymer Line in 10 or 12 lb test with out bird nesting. I can't express enough about setting the reels up to rod tip action with brakes. I grew up fishing the old Plueger Summits and Supremes before they were free spool reels and that was really tough and these new reels with the free spools and wind brakes along with the original spoon brakes and the floating free spools make life very good. I was able to actually able to spend about three days with several guys from Shimano Japan that had come here to Flippers before going to El Salto to do some fishing. They were taking some of their bigger dealers on a fishing trip to Mexico and Flipper was invited and I got to spend time with them. One of them was a tech at Shimano and he spent about 5 hours teaching me how to set up a Shimano reel to get the maximum performance out of the reels. I have several different color wind brake slides for different fishing conditions on the wind brake pins which will slow the reel speeds down or speed them up. He was the one that taught me that the whip on the tip of the rod can make a big difference in reel and casting distance. That is why I never use a rod over 6ft 8in for anything. That is why when I had snooter build my first two rods I had him balance them with Chronarch reels on them. It all comes down to balance and settings to get the max out of your reels with the least amount of resistance that create problems like bird nests. The only thing that can make any reel mess up is cheap line that retains alot of line memory. Snoot will be building me two more rods this winter if I don't win one in a drawing..........:lol::lol:
