SilverFox
I have been using PLine for a while but decided to try the new Excel in the red box after having a lot of issues with PLine breaking. This line is very limp and very strong. It cast like a dream. Reminds me of old Trilene the way it spools and cast... But a lot stronger. I've caught a bunch of smallmouth on it in the river this year with no problems. When you hang up, you almost always straighten the hook out on grub heads instead of breaking off. I did have a fish break me off but it was a 28-30 inch carp that wrapped the line around me in strong current. He may a couple big runs and when I tried to lift him by the belly he took off again with the line wrapped around the rod and me. I haven't tried any of the other size lines but if it's as good as the 8 pound line it's worth trying.
Stratos260
Thanks Kenny. I'll have to try some. I use fluoro but I like mono better. I always wonder if my knots are good enough with fluoro because they have to be about perfect or it will break.
Peck
Maybe that's the problem with the fluro I have.....snapped it twice today! I thought it was the line, never thought about it being the knot.
Stratos260
Maybe that's the problem with the fluro I have.....snapped it twice today! I thought it was the line, never thought about it being the knot.Fluoro is stiffer and more abrasion resistant than mono but it doesn't do well when it has been pinched. I have been tying the San Diego jam knot lately and it seems to be working pretty good. I still don't know how much I trust fluoro though. I was throwing a crig the other day with a 15lb fluoro main line and a 10lb mono leader and accidentally hooked the rail on my back cast and the fluoro broke above the swivel. I know it's not science but I would have thought the smaller mono would break first.
SilverFox
If I throw fluoro I use the improved clinch. Just wet it well and slide it down with your fingernails instead of pulling it. Never had a problem like that. The only time I've broke it was on hook set and it broke at the rod like it had a bad spot in it. I switch to mono 100 percent for night fishing. I use fluoro for jig or trig other than that.
fisherman1488
Thanks Kenny for the heads up on the line. I've been using Pline myself and was thinking about trying a different kind myself.
trackertxw175
i bought bulk bps excel 8 and 14 mono and have been impressed so far. still use the p-line fluoro for jigs and use a trilene knot and have not had any problems with breaking
SilverFox
The new stuff in the red box in 8 pound is a lot different than the green box. I've used green box for cranking for a couple years now with no problems.
brownfish03
Is the red box 8lb stretchy? I used the green box 8lb a few years ago and felt like I couldn't get a good hookset b/c of the stretch. I swear you could bungie jump with that junk! If the new and "improved" dosent have that excess stretch, then Id like to try it. Now, that excess stretch is GREAT on the 4lb for my winter fishing! It allows you to really fight some big fish without breaking off!!!!!
