31Airborne
For me, deep has been 6-10', usually somewhere along a tidal river grass bed. This deep, clear stuff isn't new to me. Just not as familiar. Would appreciate any/all tips for handling fish that come from deeper water. I know about fizzing fish. Should I be doing this for fish I release right away? What's the depth I should use as a guide for fizzing fish? I've read stuff on the net - depths range from 20-50'. Kinda broad range there. Anyone w/ ideas? thanks in advance, B

Stump9000
The only fish that I have ever fizzed were showing signs of distress be not swimming or trying to roll over. Their eyes will bulge some and they get lazy acting. I have never saw the need in fizzing one thats released right away. It takes a little time for the gasses to build just like the "bends" in humans. We used to put them in a recovery tank after the weigh in and watch them for a while and fizz as needed. Anyway, thats what little I know about it.
JIGSTICK
From my personal experiences anything deeper than 25' I will pay close attention to. I've caught bass in 95' of water and not have to fizz them because when I set the hook, I took lots of time to bring them up. I've caught plenty of fish in 30-60 feet of water and its about 50/50 on fizzing them. It's all in how they react to coming up. Spots usually have a tough time with it then followed by smallmouth then largeheads. There are two ways to fizz, through the mouth and lining up the a-hole with the back of the pectoral fin, three scales down from the lateral line and aim the needle slightly toward the nose of the fish and push in approximately 1 1/2", squeeze the belly of the fish slightly and listen for the release of air.
