Mountainman
Good stuff and from what I learned getting my degree, (which was limited on invertebrates), he is spot on about the 2 species and their coloration change. I found it intersting that he didnt mention the molt pattern very thoroughly.

BassinHomer
I do what I can, hey mountainman can you recommend any good reading that might enlighten someone to some more scientific Bass behavior, been thinking of picking up Knowing Bass: The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish
Mountainman
Look more toward collegiate fisheries science text books. IMO, you can learn from anybody's book. Alot of guys, especially pros, use their experiences to formulate an opinion and try to make a given scientific explanation fit into their experiences. In contrast, fisheries biologists typically let science explain the fish's behavior. As I said, you can learn from any source....its all in what you take from it. The 3 guys I learned most from were Dr. Bradford Cook & Phil Bettoli from Tennessee Tech. Google Salmoides micropterus and read some some of the hits that come up. Other than that, like I said, read everything you can, especially textbooks on fisheries biology.

softbaitmaker
I agree with a few things he says but when he says that all crawfish that burrow into clay banks emerge a bright red in Spring is a myth. I the crawfish burrow into banks of Red Clay they will emerge a red color in Spring. If the lake has no red clay and has black earth on the banks the craws will emerge a Blackish bluish color. If crawfish burrow mostly around Gravel or chunk rock areas they can be any color from Dark Brown to dark Blue to a Brown and blue or brown and Green color. During the molting cycle they will be a soft blue to a light pink for about 3 to 5 days as they new out skeleton hardens. If there happens to be a large concentration of molting crawfish in an area you will find bass in large quantities because when the crawfish molts they emit a scent in the water that a bass will travel long distances to locate. Nothing a big old bass loves more then a softshell crawfish. I spent about 6 years working with crawfish in Aquariums watching growth factors and molting factors and their abilities to change colors to adapt to their surroundings. I would move them from tank to tank and change their enviroments and then watch the changes they would go through and it was very amazing to learn about them over that period of time. I have had Crawfish that looked like baby Lobsters in size and if I can find some of the pictures I will try and scan them and post them showing the different sizes and colors and surroundings. I have always fished Soft Plastic craws because I think they will catch bigger bass in most cases.

brwnbass
From what ive seen on norris, the crayfish are usually an olive green color with a red spot on the side, or a light brown color. I like to go walk the banks this time of year with just a rod & reel & some hooks & sinkers. Just walk along & turn over rocks to find them, hook em up & catch fish.
