pitchin pigs
I might have a cheap upgrade to my 12 v TM. I'm going to trade a guy for a motorguide 24v 50# thrust. Will I need to re wire with a heavier ga. Wire or will what I had for my 12v do?
MOONlite
current is the factor, not voltage. i prefer 6 gauge for higher power motors. you may get by with 8 gauge but be sure to have a good working breaker.
Buckeye83
Very true on the current. It all depends on how many amps the new-to-you TM pulls. #8 awg is good for 50 amps and #6 awg is good for 65amps. There's some good info on this web site. http://www.trollingmotors.net/extension-guide
SteveHTN
What gauge wiring is there now? Sometimes you may see 6 for a 12v system, in which case you wouldn't have to rewire. Given that generally a 24v will draw ROUGHLY 0.9 amps per pound of thrust, and you have 50 pounds of thrust on the new motor, that means max current draw would be ROUGHLY 45 amps, so 8 gauge would work ok. But I usually like overkill when it comes to wiring.
