mouthsmasherbaits
I am in the market to buy all new bass fishing Rods and Reels. I am looking to purchase 7 Rods and 7 Reels. I have a mixed style of fishing both finesse and power. I would like 3 spinning outfits and 4 baitcasting outfits. I dont want to spend a fortune but i want good quality equipment. I am upgrading from Bass Pro Qualifier Reels and Berkley Lighting Rods. I have a few skeet reese rods and some st. croix rods. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im looking to spend no more then 150 per rod and no more then 200 per reel. Another thing please add rod size, action, and tip. And add reel size and speed. Has anyone used any JB Custom Rods they look really nice. I have also researched the Shimano Stradic CI4 for spinning set ups.Any Thoughts? softbaitmaker
You probably not going to get alot of information about this. Reason being that most anglers fish differently and a rod of reel that works well for one person may suck in the hands of another. Your just going to have to do trial and error situation more than anything. What I would do if I were you and wanting to check out other rod and reel combinatins would be to ask a few friends to borrow a rod outfit they use and try it out and see if it is comfortable to you. I have a few friends that borrow outfits from time to time to see if might have an outfit they like. They will be out of luck matching the reels I use but they can match up several of the new Revo reels with the rods I use and come very close anyway. wormman
I suggest you give Joe burns a call or an email. He makes custom rods and is amazing you tell him what you want and he puts it together for u. I just ordered a spinnerbait rod myself. I ordered a 6'6 mh. I also ordered a black carbon Johnny Morris reel. I hope this helps
MtCarmelBugMan
Well as far as a reel goes anyone who has fished with me knows I am a die hard fan of Daiwa Zillions. If you shop around you can find them for right at 200. As for rods I agree with everybody else on this one. It is really a personal choice. I love Shimano rods for certain things, but not all. I have tried several before settling on one for a certain technic but I will bet that others wouldn't like my choice. Try a few before you choose. That goes for reels too. Tackle warehouse has a program where you can demo up to 4 different reels before you buy. Make sure before you spend the money. Rods and reels are a big investment. Tubejig
IMHO it's best to use the same brand reels. I use the ol green Shimano reels, got 8 of them. I think it's best to use the same reel with different ratios for different applications. I don't have to make any adjustments with my hands so I can change to a different setup quickly and smoothly. Several brands out there but I like Shimano. I'm sure other manufacturers have quality reels. Parts for major brands are easy to find and this may be important a few years down the pike. I also like the US Reels for spinning but when the one's I have now need replacing, it's Shimano for me. I think there are several good rod brands out there. Picking up one brand then another is not as critical to me as it is with reels. But I do have to take a little time to adjust from split handles to solid handles and casting to spinning. loomis, Lamiglas, St Croix are the upper end of rods, IMHO. Gary Loomis learned the trade from Lamiglas, this is where he began his career. Both are outstanding rods with excellent customer service. St Croix is very good too. TFO, Castaway, Falcon, Fenwick are all good brands. Carrot Stick has had a lot of quality issues. I know I got a bit carried away but it's just my 2 cents!!!!! Wiseguy909
Give the Abu Garcia Revo SX a look. I love them and have had no issues what so ever with them. I bought a Lews speed spool a few weeks ago that feels reel good so far. If you don't mind used rods Dixie Baits is getting ready to sell all of his Falcon Rods and going to Veritas. brwnbass
Give the BPS carbonlite rods a look. You cant beat them for the price. I think its the best $100 rod out there by far. Alot better than most of the $200 & up rods out there too. The johnny morris elite rods are top notch also. I have had several of them & they are great. The shimano crucial would be next on that list for me. As for reels, i use quantum pti spinning reels & they are awesome, no trouble i almost 10 years of use. I am finally wearing 1 of the 3 out. I also use BPS reels, the JM elite is a great reel, i have beat the snot out of it & it still works as new after 6 years. I got an ardent xs 1000 last year & it wont hold a candle to the BPS elite. Triton196
As some have said the best thing you can do is borrow someone elses equipment and see which best feel good to you. But my is the Revo XS reels are some of the best out there. The Veritas rods are very light and extremely sensitive but the action of them are just slightly off so if you are wanting a med-heavy action its best to go with a medium action. Also the Joe's Custom rods are very good rods and well worth the money.

lunkerhunter1982
I use mainly Powell rods because they feel better to me than about anything else, but I also have and use Shimano and G-Loomis rods for certain applications. A word of warning, you might hear a lot of good things about Carrot Stix, but I will never buy another one after owning and breaking 4. I use Shimano reels, both spinning and casting reels. However, I also have some Revos, and a couple of Quantum PT's. All are good reels. Like everybody said, buy what feels good and is comfortable. I would stick with stuff that has warranties and is proven (the reason I am holding off on Lews reels is because they are relatively new in this new configuration). AllOutdoors
Give the BPS Carbon Black rod and reel a try. 200. bucks for the combo. All my Revo's (S and SX's) have taken a backseat to the Carbon Black Reels.
