BassinHomer
hey guys I was wondering if it would be possible to set up my cranking/trolling motor battery on a 24 volt system and how this is done exactly and would it hurt anything if my Trolling Motor was only a 12 volt? I need more time on the water my trolling/starting battery is pretty much done after about 8hours and I'm limping back to the ramp. The reason I had my trolling motor hooked to my starting battery was so it would re-charge somewhat when scooting down the lake, I've had a seperate battery for my trolling motor before but it usually crashes when it's seperate from the cranking battery. Stratos260
If your system is twelve volt you will have to stay with 12 volts coming from you batteries, but you can hook up another battery in series which means you just hook another battery up positive to positive negative to negative. To hook up 24 volt you connect two batteries parrallel which means batteries connected together positve to negative on one post of the batteries with the positive and negatives from the other posts going out to the positive and negative of the trolling motor but like I said earlier you will have to have a 24 volt trolling motor to go 24 volt. MOONlite
parallel is positive to positive and remains 12 volts, series is positive to negative and makes 24 volts. lots of people get this confused and try to run blacklights on 24 volts. BassinHomer
so basically if I hook them up in series then I'm more or less jumping each battery off with the other? oh and thanks fo the link!

Got my series and parrallel mixed up but the way I described hooking them up will give you the same end result. If you are trying to run a black light off of a 24 volt system you just hook up to the positve and negative of one of the batteries and it will still be 12 volts

I run my black lights off my 24 volt trolling motor all the time but I hooked them into the batteries with a voltage reducer that converts 24 back to 12 and put them on a switch. But I know what you mean about folks doing that and it sure makes lights bright for about 10 seconds before the wiring melts or the bulbs pop...... Mountainman
Heres a thought: If youve got room to an extra btty, buy you a Perko-type switch (Perko) to change from btty A to btty B. Just a thought. I would suggest you not start running TM off cranking btty. Just my

I know I fished with a guy that did that and we had to call a buddy to come pull us in cause he ran the start battery and trolling motor battery down together on 24 volt system..... Mountainman
Yeah been there & its not a great feeling. Thats why I carry jumper cables in my boat. Run a cranking btty down? Not a problem, just jump it off one of the TM bttys. OR use it to jump your boat off of someone else's. OR Jump someone else's boat off instead of towing them in or unhooking one of your bttys & handing across that deep lake to another boat.

Just a short cheap pair but it gets the job done when you have to jump the starting battery from Deep cycle. That is why I don't have anything extra on my starting battery except what came on it new. Any add on's I have made to the boat are run through that step down voltage reducer off my 24 volt system. I have my pro air, Black Lights, GPS, Console Depth finder all on deep cycles along with trolling motor. Oh yea I do have one thing on my starting battery that is not factory and that is my headlights but the only time I have those on is when I am running so they don't draw any power from battery but get power from big motor.
