i tell ya what, im 'bout dang gone tired of going back and forth to the shop... dad and decided to take a look at my motor over the weekend and the results friggin SUCKED!!!! every plug but one was fouled.. these plugs were put in maybe 4wks earlier... well thank God for warranties.. got six new plugs and got 4 of them squared away and gotta tap two.. well sucker still didnt start right and our final observation is this, bad coils... there goes 1k into the motor cuz coils are $150 each for my big mamma jamma!!! greg said he may get them for 115 each but still hurts the wallet... kinda contemplating on selling my rig.. aint got the money to keep going in and out of the shop!!! dad keeps telling me to go to e-tec but i think he is on some serious crack.. no offense evinrude guys, its just i didnt have any luck out of my 'rude... sry just gotta get that out of my system... shew i feel a bit better now!!!

Hey man, try napa auto parts for your coils. Not many people know but you can get outboard motor parts thru them & sometimes alot cheaper than anywhere else. They even have a catalog to order from & its a big one. You may even look into aftermarket stuff, like msd or crane. I wouldnt think that all the coils would go bad at one time, sounds more like a power pack issue to me or maybe even a voltage or ground problem.

Exactly what i was thinkin. When dealing with mechanical stuff, huge coincidinces are the exception, not the rule.

Were the plugs oil fouled or gas fouled? My Yamaha oil fouls plugs about three times a year depending on how much idling around I do but I have had them foul out running in the channel also. But then again Yamaha's are noted for oil fouling plugs because of that high pressured oil injection but it saves the motor so I can go to NAPA and they keep my plugs in stock here locally. I keep two back up sets in boat and can change them out on the water when they foul out. It may be your oiling system fouling out the plugs..... Might be something to look at.... :thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

they are being gas fouled.... i have had a problem with it surging and losing power all yr.. i thought it was fixed once the plugs were changed but apparently not.. i do have a censor that is being ordered due to ethanol eating it up so it is kinda jerry rigged right now with a bolt plugging the hole so the alarm wont go off for water in fuel... i may be without the sucker for the rest of the yr until i will be able to pay him like i normally do

coils have been a problem on opti's. using insulated pliers, pull 1 plug wire off at a time and see if the idle changes. you can also hear them poppin if they're firing.

if they're all firing, check the tracker valve.

broken reeds are possible also.

I would suggest taking it to a mechanic that has a computer that hooks up to the opti and diagnoses the problem. I have had a bad coil before and it was rather easy to find but it would start just fine and run fine just not enough power to get it out of the hole. If it is the powerpack or some other part, the computer would spot it rather quickly.

the computer hasnt shown whether the coils are bad or not.. all the computer has shown was water in fuel.. he called a merc tech back in march and checked coils while on phone with him and they showed fine so i didnt think much about it.. i dunno if he needs to update computer or what, but again the computer hasnt shown anything... i may go friday and check it myself while he works on others and see what we can do..

a computer with merc software allows you to kill the fire or fuel on each cylinder independently. most of the time this will identify the problem but i have seen a coil only fail after it gets hot. have they checked fuel and air pressure?

Sounds like the computer may be going into " limp mode " because of the sensor reading water in the fuel. If this is the case, the sensor will fix it. But the root of you problem is probably caused by the ethanol fuel condensating & causeing the sensor to read water in the fuel. It then tells the computer to retard the timing, so as not to hurt the motor due to bad gas or water in the gas. You may need to start using an additive to "dry" the water from the system & keep it from happening again. Ethanol sucks, it tears up alot of stuff & you can thank our gvmnt for that......

Sounds similar to my last problem which was a broken reed. If they are metal it wont be good. Hopefully you have the carbon fiber ones. I changed mine over the week the warranty ran out. Good luck finding the problem, I chased my problem for a year till it was too late.

honestly, that was our initial thought cause we took the sensor out after finding out it was ate up.. that may be the root cause and honestly i hope it is.. it would be a cheaper fix :P:P ...

Ill tell you right now.... I was in a Ranger that had a new Etec 250 on it and it was Phenomenal!! So Quiet and Smooth! Had great speed too! Not to mention it was super easy on gas! We went from Dandridge to the Dam, and back up the River to look around and used around 1/4 tank of fuel. Now we were just cruising it, but still!!! Super impressed by it!
