astro172
looking for some tips on deep water crankbaits. Like what's the best cover and time of year Thanks for the help
BassinHomer
Any time of year when the fish are deep is a good time to throw cranks, I like throwing them along ledges and generally trying to make sure my crank runs a couple of feet deeper than the structure I'm fishing, it's also a good idea to parrallel structure and work the bait beside it instead of against it and then back, keeps the lure in the strikezone longer. trackertxw175
line diameter will make a difference on how deep the crank runs. if you have 20lb line and the lure runs 12' deep it will run deeper with 15lb line. some crank manufacturers are now showing on the package how deep with what weight line. familyman14
Has anyone tried those new Dredger cranks? I'm thinkin about getting one but I wanna hear some feedback first. Great tips though guys, thats why I like this site so much. You get real answers, not some guy just trying to get you to buy his sponsored crap by feeding you what you wanna hear. I've got 2 cranking set ups. 1 Has a Abu Revo Winch on a Med Heavy Bass Pro Crankin Stick. The other is a Lews Speed Spool on a Castaway medium action launcher. Both reels are 5:4:1. I've had good Luck with Fat Free Shad's,Rapala DT series, DD22's, Deep Lil N's. I have thrown the Hot Lips till I was blue in the face and still not caught a fish on it. trackertxw175
i have 2 baitcasters in my arsenal that are not blistering retrieve speed that i use on cranks to force myself to slow down. one is an old abu 5000 3.5 to 1. the other is a shimano 4.5 to 1. Jamie De Vera
ahhh my kind of subject ... i use 3 setups for deep cranking.. 2 setups are the same, bass pro pro qualifier 5.4:1 reels set up on 7'6 crankin sticks.. talk about a sweet setup.. casts very awesome with 12lb Vicious fluoro.. the other is a 7'10 KVD Crankin Rod with a KVD 5.3:1 reel.. i need to downsize the rod.. i use nothing but 12lb Vicious.. i tried the Deep Cranking line from Suffix that is acutally a mono but fishes like fluoro and it did pretty well but i'll stick with 100% fluoro.. i deep crank summertime and wintertime.. i fish chunk rock and pea gravel points and banks.. if i am searching and hit a tree or bush i put it away and use finesse tactics mainly cause i end up getting hung up and losing my lure

I'm not familiar with these what is the deal? and to add further reply to the initial question I like 15lb berkely big game mono and I pretty much let the fish hook themselves, and +2 on the stop and start retrieve, never thought about using flouro for cranking DD22's are a great choice for a biggner deep diver or a expert for that matter Wiseguy feel your pain on the hotlips brother
softbaitmaker
Ya'll may not believe this but at one time back in my younger days I actually fished crankbaits....... I began using an old 3.8.1 Quantum Cranking reel. Most folks never understood why I used such a slow reel. I got to spend some time with David Fritts one day on his boat when he came to Old Hickory and if anyone knew cranking it was David. He fished the old Cedar 300 Poes Crankbaits and he used a crankin reel just like I had. He said it's not how fast you get the lure down that is important. It is how long it remains in the strike zones. The slower reels will make the baits go deeper than fast reels because the reel is not constantly trying to pull the lure upward. It allows the lure to travel to its deepest run and will stay down alot longer in the strike Zones. He ended up giving me one of his Fiberglas crankin sticks that day as part of my pay for the guide trip. I used that rod for about 10 years and still have it. Hanging on my man cave wall collecting dust. I used DD22's DD14's and DLN's 99% of the time because back then I was sponsored by Norman Lures. Had to tune most of them. Learned another trick that day from David which I guess I can share since I don't think he is competing any longer and I don't crank any more. He showed me how to tune crankbaits so he could cast to a dock and actually make the cranbait swin sideways and under the dock. He had baits tuned for both sides of the docks and rods on one side of deck would swim baits one way and rods on the other side of the deck would swim in the other direction. I figured out later you can do the same tuning with Buzz baits and docks. Back when I fished Kentucky Lake I have been known to actually C-Rig Cranks to get them to go deeper on the big ledges on Kentucky Lake. It worked quite well. Hope this helps some of you younger guys since now this old man is soft plastics and jigs 99% of the time.....

bronzebackhuntr
To add to this post, I like to consider myself pretty handy with a deep diving crankbait in my hands. I primarily fish DD22, strike king 6xd, and the DD spro little johns. I caught my first 2 fish on soho last sat deep cranking and nudging the crank through trees about 15ft deep. Also lost 2 fish on this Sat too. They were just slapping at it. Anytime you wanna try it out just holla at me, I'd love to go do some deep cranking, heck I'd only bring 3 rods. 2 with cranks and a football jig to follow up with. The only thing I like better than deep cranking is topwater..... Fish them slow, fish them deep, don't be afraid to throw them near deep cover. If you're not fishing where you can get hung up, chances are, you're not fishing where they're at.

It's suppose to dive straight down to a specified depth instead of cranking it to get there. It says its suppose to fall like a jig and then stand up when it gets to the desired depth. Plus it has the spintech hooks. It's suppose to be able to stay in the targeted depth longer and reach a "true" depth of whichever one you get. Like I said I haven't tried one yet but I was thinkin about pickin one up to see just askin around.
Jamie De Vera
my dad has a dredger but we havent thrown it yet... from what he tells me the dredgers are suppose to be fished like jigs and/or C-rigs.. it was interesting to hear it but again havent thrown it.. we were gonna try it this yr but both boats in the shop and no way to test it out... If you use it let me know, I watched the segment on it and I just don't know, the biggest problem I see is that even if it stands up when it hits bottom thus keeping the hooks away from the bottom they claim it still swims like a normal crankbait which means once you start cranking those hooks are going to have just as much chance of getting hung up as anything else, I'm curious though and would like to try one
flipperjig
i throw deep cranks on fluro line either 8lb or 10lb...with the 8lb you have to check your line alot!!!! i use the revo winch reel in a 5.4:1 ratio and crank the wizz out of it...i try not to stop while cranking...i like it bumping and reflecting off of everything..the more stuff i can hit the more bites i get...i have caught several fish this year on a deep crank but most of them have been on DD22...just my 2 pennies worth!!
