Float n fly rod length

Leave it to me to bring up float n fly in the hottest part of the summer but I've been looking in to getting a float n fly rig before cold weather. Punisher offers a kit that has everything you need to float n fly fish and that's probably what I'm going to buy. They give you the choice between an 8,9, or 10' rod. I have never float n fly fished before so I was wanting some opinions on which rod length would be the best. I have another question about the float n fly also. I was wondering which is the best way to rig the float. Some people use a 3 way swivel while others use slip bobbers. I was wondering why you couldn't just put the bobber on the line so you could adjust your leader length easily.

I've got the 8ft BPS rod and I like it a lot, it doesn't seem as awkward to me as a 9ft does. As far as the floater goes I have always just attached to strait to the line and never had any problems :thumbsup2:

I use a elcheapo 9 ft crappie rod from wally world ,bought the rod reel combo an threw the reel away for I think $30 bucks works fine for me . I put a mitchell 308xe reel on it and catch lots of bass on the fly ,and a big ole carp bout 7 lbs..lol. I just clip the bobber straight on the line no problems . Hope this helps :thumbsup2:

While we're on the subject what do you guys think the best line is for fnf. I know flourocarbon is best because it is invisible but I also know it doesn't work well in a spinning outfit. I have been looking at the Pline flouroclear because I love Pline CX. The Flouroclear is actually a copolymer so it casts easier than flourocarbon but I'm sure it's not as clear as flourocarbon. What line do you all use?

A lot of people will say to use 4# line, but I use 6# Suffix and I do not think I get any less bites. As far as rod length, the deeper you fish the longer rod you need to make casting easier. If you don't fish 20 ft. or deeper(most people don't), 8 or 9 ft. is fine for fishing 10 to 12 ft. deep. Slip bobbers?, I don't know anyone that uses them. Three way swivels?, they would work but would be harder to adjust for different depths. Just clip your bobber on your line.

Ive bobber fished for along time so hopefully, I can offer you some good advice. First in terms of rods. The BPS's FNF rods are very good entry level rods for the money and quite honestly, probably all you'll ever need. But, with like most things, you can spend more money to get a lighter more sensitive rod....only problem with sensitivity is, you dont need it! You never feel a bite while fishing a FNF.....you see the bite when you float goes down. I do think you can get a bit more cast length out of a higher priced rod but, the diference in price for say a Loomis is not worth it starting out. For rod length, generally speaking an 8' rod is what you will need 80% of the time. A rod in this lenght is good for fishing at depths from 6-12ft. I couldnt begin to tell you how many fish Ive caught setting the bobber at an 8ft depth. With a "leader" over 12ft, it gets harder and harder to cast on an 8ft rod. I have rods from 8ft, 9ft, 10ft, 12ft. The longer rods are used for casting longer "leaders". Sometimes when its brutally cold, you might have to fish the bobber set at say 20ft....a longer rod makes casting this possible. Starting out, Id go with a rod 8-9ft....you will get more out of a rod that length than any other.

Line...there is only one line I have ever used in 10 years or so of FNF fishing. Ive never broke a fish off on it. It cast very good and is very cheap. BPS's 4lb clear mono is all you'll ever need. I landed a 16lb trout on it last season and fought a catfish that had to be over 30lbs for over 20mins, until it got me hung up in a tree. That 4lb mono has someting that fluro dosent have! STRETCH!!!! That stretch is a very important part of FNF fishing. Paired with the extreem flex of a bobber rod, that is what helps you land 5lb smallies on such a tiny lure. Once again, Ive landed hundredes if not thousands of fish on this line and never broke on off! Ive had the fly pull out of a fishes mouth....but, no breaks. For the price, you cant beat it....hands down.

Bobber...some guys like the 3 way swivel rig, and thats fine, but I tend to be lazy..lol. Thats too many break points for me and too much trouble to tie. All you really need to do is wrap your line 3 times around the bottom end of a small pear shaped bobber and your ready to sling. Anytime I change depths, I retie, but other than that, you wont break off doing this. Just wrap 3 times on the bottom and thats it. Wrapping on the bottom end of the bobber only, allows the float to lay on its side if your fly is on the bottom of the lake. Once you fly is off the bottom, you float will stand up. The only exception to this rule is that if your fly has been off the bottom of the lake and it suddenly lays on its side, more than likley, a fish has risen up to the fly, taken it, and released tension on the line allowing the float to lay over. More times than not, you wont have a problem detecting a bite cause your float will shoot down out of site in the water. No hook set motion is required. Just reel to the fish and hold your rod up above your head at the same time. 90% of the time, the fish will be hooked smack dab in the top of his lip! Hopefully this helps you out and if I left anything out just ask!

Thank you all for all of your help. You guys have really cleared it all up for me. I never thought I would wish for cold weather but I'm kind of excited to get out and try everything I've learned. Bandit was wanting us to tell why we think that TNBF rocks. This is why TNBF rocks. :thumbsup2:

I put bb's in my float last year and had good success..You can cast it a country mile with weight on or in the bobber.. I use a 12 footer and probably set my depth at around 14 foot. walmart sells a BNM that you can get from 8 to 12 feet i thing.. I personally like the longer rod because achieving the depth required is hard to get with a short rod. I use 4 # flurocarbon and havnt had much trouble with a light drag.

+1 on the b&m crappie rod, they work great, not too whippy, not to stiff. I use 6lb sunline super mono, its as clear as floro but has stretch like mono & $10 a spool that'll last you all winter. I have tried the slip bobber method & it wont work, the fly is too light to pull the line thru the float & the stop wont stay in place very well either. You can put the float right on the line with no problems, or use the 3 way. If you use the 3 way, carry an extra spool of line & just pull off what you need instead of retying everything.Thats the whole reason to use a 3 way swivel, it makesit easier to change your depth. I know some people who use a bit larger reel & a braid main line & you almost never have to retie the main line. Light braid will cast a mile on a spinning reel too. I wouldnt recomend the punisher set up, its waaayy overpriced for what you get. Its plain & simple overkill. Its a LOT of fun to catch a big ol brown fish on a 10ft rod & light line!!!!!!!:thumbsup2:

OK i've got a question. I noticed on the B&M rods that they have small eyes all the way down the rod. Do you guys use soley spinning reels on thos rods or can you use like a underspin reel on those rods or not? I bought one of the BPS Micro lites because of that and I think its a 8 or 9 footer ive got it propped up in a corner of my building. If any of you guys get an open seat this winter I would love to tag along and try it.

I put a spinning reel on mine & it casts good. If i were you i wouldnt leave that rod propped up like that, it will bend it permanently, those lite rods warp easy. I fish a FnF from the bank quite a bit on deep rock banks & catch some fish, just gotta watch your backcast.:thumbsup2:

I went by my local Walmart today and they had the B&M crappie rods in 10, 11, and 12'. I went ahead and bought a 10' and an Okuma avenger reel. I got the 10' because it is kind of in the middle and I figure that length is a good place to start. If I feel like I need a longer rod I'll go get a 12'. At $40 I wouldn't mind to have a couple of them anyway. I really appreciate all of your help. I don't know what got me thinking about fnf in the middle of summer. I guess working outside in this hot weather has got me wanting cold weather.

fnf is killr here on norris at times as well as tight lining flies in the winter...never tried it any other time of the year besides jan, feb, early mar....

I get the week after Christmas off so I'm planning on coming down to Norris for a couple of days then. A friend of mine is interested in fnf fishing too so we're going to come down and stay at his uncle's houseboat on the Powell side and try it one day and the next day we're going to go over to Lakeview and try that area. I hope we can catch a few just to get some confidence in fnf fishing.
